The city of Muğla is the seat of the Province of Muğla in south western Turkey. Although the province is home to numerous holiday resorts, Muğla remains a traditional Turkish city with its own culture and identity. From the Muğla-style houses in the Saburhane district to its own Turkish cuisine it has retained much of its valued past while moving into the future. The University of Muğla attracts students from all over Turkey which bring with them their own cultural and regional influences - creating a balance of tradition with diverse and forward thinking.

The main source of the economy of Muğla lies in agriculture producing honey, olives, fruit, almonds and vegetables. But in the past decade it has begun to host tourists that in the past side-stepped the city to holiday in the various coastal resorts in the province. Muğla is also known for its marble quarrys which produce much of the marble used in the country. The first female provincial governor in Turkey, Lale Aytaman, was elected to office in Muğla in the 1990s.
